I launched my career as a writer when I was 4 years old and came up with commercials for Herbal Essence shampoo in the bathtub. But my true calling as an author revealed itself in third grade when I wrote 18 essays and won an award for most prolific writer. My teacher told me not to stop until I wrote a best-selling novel. So here I am.
I went to college for a degree in Public Communications with a creative writing minor. I was fortunate to work as a newspaper reporter for every daily across the Capital Region of Albany, NY. I was always on the go and loved it. I covered municipal meetings, school boards, a kid who made granola for squirrels, library used book sales, tarot card reading, a day in the life of a beekeeper, a memorial service for people who had donated their bodies to science, the 6 most common nightmares, haunted B&Bs (a personal favorite), pumpkin growers, sidewalk chalkers, ice sculptors, cheese makers, craft beer brewers, jump ropers, sky divers, coffee servers and protestors. I rode in an ice cream truck (yes I got free samples), watched a man drink a glass of muddy, algae-infested river water to prove it was safe, cried with a mother who lost her son to MS, sang happy birthday to MLK with a class of beaming first-graders, watched kids’ faces turn purple in a blueberry pie-eating contest and so much more.
Frequently my own three children went along with me, and my job as a working writer and a mom formed the foundation of my life and understanding of the power of positive energy. My mantra is “want it, and believe you can have it.”
I loved, and still love writing news stories and features, and have a profound respect for reporters, many of them friends.
I would like to give my sincerest thanks to the many people who helped me launch A Girl Like You. I am grateful to my teachers at the NYS Writer’s Institute workshops, and the International Women’s Writers Guild; my friends on Twitter and Facebook; my fellow upstate NY writers; the many volunteer readers and editors; to everyone who ever believed I had a story to tell; and to my sweet Sydney, who inspired my love of dogs.
